Skin healing and protection / pain relieving / uplifting

The making of St John’s Wort (SJW) oil is the perfect demonstration of folk medicine as a living art - everyone does it differently! Harvesting SJW is also intimately tied to place and time, blooming once per year around the summer solstice in wide open spaces where heat and full sun are plentiful.

SJW oil’s virtues for use on the skin are many, and include:

  • Relaxing and pain relieving - SJW oil brings warmth where applied, penetrating beneath the skin to relax muscles and ease cramping. SJW’s pain reliving capacity has a specific affinity for the nerves, especially where there is “shooting” nerve pain, shingles, neuralgia, sciatica and other pain associated with the nervous system. SJW has the added benefit of also being an inflammation modulating remedy that can be useful where an individual has excessive pain as a result of inflammation (e.g. arthritis, spasm, cramping, bruising and sprains, etc).

  • Burns- soothing and healing sunburn and burns from injury. Can also provide topical pain relief in these contexts and is widely regarded as having greater healing capacity than Aloe Vera in this regard.

  • Wounds - particularly puncture wounds. The antimicrobial properties of SJW help to disinfect wounds and aid in healing.

  • Sun protection - while the internal use of SJW can result in increased photosensitivity, paradoxically when applied externally it can provide mild sun protection.

  • HSV and related dormant-virus outbreaks- SJW oil is a renown folk herbal remedy for cold sore and shingle flare-ups.

My SJW products are made from fresh flowering tops, wildcrafted at the summer solstice using Kami McBride’s method.

I have been battling a shingles outbreak and it’s been an intense 2 weeks. The nerve pain is something I have never been through and it was the most pain I’ve experienced on that level. I bought 2 of your St John’s Wort body oils and it has been the only thing to give some relief topically. Truly a gift.

I ended up with a big coldsore, first one in a year, travelling in New Zealand. Thank god I bought SJW salve, quickest healing I’ve ever had!

The SJW salve on my face when I’ve seen a little too much sun/wind - lives in my handbag regularly saving the day for its many uses. And the SJW oil for ALL things a little boy growing. When his shin/knees hurt in the night. When we get mosquito/tick bites practically instant itch relief and it was an absolute game changer on his stiff little neck after a trampoline accident that ended in a hospital visit. In my opinion St John’s Wort is a must for every parent.

My partner gets a wicked cold sore every now and then, usually takes a whole two weeks to get over but I suggested he apply the oil on it and at first hint and it never fully formed and was gone in about 5-6 days! Felt way better throughout too! Applied the oil about 3x a day. Amazing!

100% outperforms aloe in my experience!

When you had SJW oil in the shop I stocked up and bought 3 or 4 bottles. My partner is as white as they come, and it has been so soothing and calming for his sunburnt skin. It’s his favourite herbal remedy. In the past he has used it when he cut his finger with a knife and in 24 hours it was a scar, he couldn’t believe it.
