Schisandra Elixir
Schisandra chinensis is a profound adaptogen and Shen tonic. Schisandra berries are considered the quintessential tonic herb by Taoist masters. Known as Wu Wei zi in Chinese, meaning “five flavour fruit”, it has all the five flavours recognised by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and salty. Because the berry contains all five tastes, it is understood to benefit the five yin organs which are the kidneys, liver, lungs, heard and spleen.
Adaptogen - Schisandra is most well-known for being a calming adaptogen that can simultaneously relieve mild anxiety while promoting alertness, focus and clarity. As an adrenal-corticol restorative, Schisandra can assist in cases of loss of stamina, fatigue, stress and chronic illness.
Balances fluid levels -Schisandra’s astringent quality is used to tone and strengthen kidney function and to help the body clear excess fluid. This action can be used to control frequent urination, premature ejaculation as well as menopausal and excess sweating/night sweats.
Sexual function - David Winston notes that Schisandra tones the sexual organs of both men and women. For men it is thought to increase the production of seminal fluid and improve sexual stamina as well as supporting individuals experiencing premature ejaculation and low sex drive. For women is believed increase circulation to, and enhance the sensitivity in, the genitals.
Skin health - Schisandra has been long used in China to promote beautiful skin and provide protection from sun and wind damage. The astringent nature of Schisandra features here again, assisting the skin to hold moisture. Its action on the liver (see next point) can contribute to improvements with skin issues, particularly allergy-induced hives and eczema.
Liver function - Helps regenerate liver cells and increase essential liver antioxidants and support the liver with its detoxification process, eliminating waste from the body. Animal studies suggest it could be particularly useful for chemical and drug-induced lived damage.
Immune system support - Schisandra is used in conditions of low immunity, frequent infections as well as in instances of immunodeficient disorders such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It can also support an immune system under the stress of allergic and autoimmune reactions.
Respiratory health - Clears mucous and can calm a laboured cough. Indicated for chronic coughing, wheezing, asthma, shortness of breath, altitude sickness, and respiratory infections.
Central Nervous System trophorestorative - Schisandra is considered restorative to the brain and nervous system, sharpening intellectual activity, coordination, and sense perception. For this reason Schisnadra is indicated for cerebral and nervous system deficiencies including: memory loss, mental fatigue, loss of concentration, dizziness, chronic physical fatigue, insomnia and sleep disorders, paralysis, myelitis, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Guillian-Barré syndrome.
Has a normalising effect on blood pressure, meaning it can lower elevated blood pressure and raise low blood pressure.
Shen tonic - In TCM Schisandra is used to calm the spirit that resides in the heart. Shen tonics are used in cases of insomnia, dream disturbed sleep and anxiety.
