Iron / Copper Mineral Oxymel
Many of us are deficient in iron and I believe that a large proportion of the supplementation offered as a remedy is over-processed making it hard for our bodies to work with, and provided in the absence of a harmonious formula that allows our body to assimilate the nutrients we need with effectiveness and ease.
When we make our own herbal supplements using natural whole foods (yes, herbs can be food and food can be medicine!) they are impregnated with the vital nectar of mother nature that your body recognises and knows how to use. Designed to be a pleasurable tonic taken over time, it is my hope that this offering will support you in overall vitality and health.
Iron is the word on the lips of many in the collective right now. But what is it and why is does it impact us so profoundly? Red blood cells contain an iron-rich protein called hemoglobin which helps transport oxygen around the body. When a person does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body’s tissues, this can be referred to as iron deficiency or anaemia. No surprise, reaching this point feels awful: fatigue, generalised weakness, brittle nails and hair loss, low energy, headache and even shortness of breath.
Iron deficiency is very common and can especially affect:
Women who menstruate (particularly if periods are heavy), are pregnant or breastfeeding or those who have recently given birth;
People with gastrointestinal diseases such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases (such as ulcerative colitis), or Crohn’s;
People who have undergone major surgery or physical trauma; and
Vegetarians, vegans, and anyone whose diets doesn’t include iron-rich foods.
THE FORMULA
The apricot and orange palette I’ve utilised is a classic base for an iron tonic. Apricots are a great source of iron, the absorption of which is enhanced by their own copper content and by combining it with the Vitamin C found in Orange peel and Strawberry leaf which also enhance iron uptake. Apricots and strawberry leaves also contain potassium, an electrolyte which helps to move nutrients into the cells of the body; calcium; magnesium; phosphorus; fibre; phytonutrient vitamins C and A (also known as retinol); and antioxidants. Blackstrap molasses also contains iron and iron absorption enhancers such as sulfur, fructose, and copper. 30ml of blackstrap molasses contains 18 amino acids, antioxidants, more iron than eggs, more calcium than milk, and more potassium than any other food. Nettles (my garden inspiration for getting this offering off the ground) is a supreme nutritive herb, containing: zinc, iron, protein, chlorophyll, vitamins A E C D K and B, selenium, boron, sodium, iodine, coper, fibre, potassium, magnesium, calcium, fatty acids AND MORE! Nettles are widely used in food, infusions and extractions to help build the blood, strengthen bones and nourish every cell in the body.
The above ingredients have been extracted into an organic apple cider vinegar and raw honey menstruum. It’s also worth noting that the fibre in apricots and blackstrap molasses particular are known to assist in instances of constipation.
Ingredients
Urtica dioica (Nettle leaves)*, sulphate-free dried apricots^, dried Citrus sinensis (orange peel)^, Strawberry leaves, local raw honey, Apple Cider Vinegar,* blackstrap molasses^ (*fresh home grown; ^organic). Please note that when the season doesn't allow for fresh nettles and strawberry leaves, I substitute for organic dried nettle leaves and Red Raspberry leaves.
Use
Use intuitively directly into mouth or add to food and beverages. 1 tsp - 1-2 tbsp as needed. Best consumed within the first six months following purchase for optimal potency.
