Gotu kola (Centella asiatica), alsoknown as Kula kud in India and Pennywort in Australia and beyond, is most widely known as a herb for enhancing cerebral function as well as being a rejuvenating tonic for depleted nervous systems.

In Ayurvedic medicine, Gotu kola is used as medhya rasayanas, or brain tonic. By increasing peripheral circulation to the brain, Gotu kola can be used to nourish, strengthen and build the brain to assist with with increasing memory and alertness, easing mental fatigue, early-stage dementia and head trauma. Gotu kola can be an ally to both a scattered and a stagnant mind. In the case of the former, individuals who struggle with focus and concentration as the result of high levels of stress, and in the latter where the mind is clouded or heavy.

Gotu Kola is also a primary herb in Ayurveda for treating nervous system disorders such as nervousness, insomnia and stress. One way that this herb works on the nervous system is by acting on the GABA neurotransmitter in the central nervous system that blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain. This can create a relaxing effect, enhance your mood and help alleviate anxiety or mood disorders and epilepsy, and even chronic pain. This GABA interaction can also be beneficial for its use in low sex drive and hypertension. Gotu Kola holds the potential to reduce cortisol and adrenaline levels which can support individuals experiencing irritability, anxiety and nervous disorders.

As a tissue tonic and astringent, Gotu Kola can strengthen connective tissues and vasculature which can be useful in cases of hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux. ulcers, varicose veins, haemorrhoids and wound healing.

It’s rejuvenating to the skin on both the surface level and on the deep tissue level and has been widely used for skin disorders from psoriasis, eczema and wounds to leprosy and general dry skin conditions. It impacts collagen synthesis as well as blood vessel repair that makes it valuable for wound healing and for chronic skin conditions.

Gotu kola’s affinity for chronic skin conditions can also be attributed to both its blood purifying capacity and alterative action. Alteratives open the body’s channels of elimination to support natural detoxification processes and can also be useful for sore throats, hepatitis, measles, some STD’s and uninary tract infections.

Gotu kola is a cool and moistening herb that can be also useful for a range of inflammatory conditions such as:

  • musculoskeletal inflammation (rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis);

  • neurological inflammation (head trauma and Alzheimer’s disease); inflammation of the skin such as cellulitis and psoriasis;

The Gotu Kola tincture is healing my brain fog! If I take it first thing in the morning with the intention of a clear mind I find that I am less scattered, able to focus and actually meet my goals for the day (rather than buzzing around like a blind bee from one task without finishing the other). It’s a winner. Thank you Lou
