Immune system stimulation + symptom support for cold and flu, fever and congestion

The Elder tree is arguably one of the most rich in Celtic and European folklore than any other plant. Said to be inhabited by the Elder Mother, chopping Elder branches was once considered dangerous in places such as rural England (and may still be) Woodcutters would recite a rhyme, or risk her wrath!

Elder has also been long considered as natures medicine chest. It was exhilarating to witness her ferocious growth from seedling to tree in less than a year. I made a tincture from her tiny and delicate flowers over spring and was lucky enough to receive a large stash of her berries from a friend’s organic flower farm. This gave me the opportunity to make a powerful immune system focused remedy to share as we descent towards winter here in the Southern Hemisphere.

Elderberry (distinct from Elderflower) is a herb that is known for:

  • Anti-viral action - shown to reduce symptom duration and severity in a variety of influenza strains.

  • Antioxidant richness - high in vitamins C, Bs and flavonoids

  • Helping to clear excess mucous and congestion

  • Modulating inflammation in the body generally, and in the respiratory, gut and urinary tract specifically.

The Elderberry in this elixir is combined with either vodka or brandy together with organic orange peel, cinnamon bark, local raw honey, and a splash of elderflower tincture made from my very own Sambucus nigra tree for a little added blood cleansing, decongestant and diaphoretic/fever support.

Note: this is not an Elderberry syrup. These elixirs are more potent extractions with the shelf life of a tincture.

Ingredients

Fresh Sambucus nigra berry*, Australian brandy, dried orange peel*, cinnamon bark*, local raw honey, vodka, Elderflower tincture (Sambucus nigra flower^, vodka). [* Organic, ^Homegrown]

Use: As an immune stimulant, Elderberry is best utilised at the onset of a cold or flu or following a possible exposure in small doses such as 1/2 dropper throughout the day. For short-term immune support take 1-2 droppers a day.
